During the past 24 hours this is what has happened:
11pm on Aug. 30 – Every pre-trip item was taken care
11:15-ish pm – My ride to the airport picked me up. The plan was to stay at my friend’s house who lives closer to the airport so it would be a short drive in the wee hours of the morning.
3am July 1 – we both slept through our alarms!
5:30am – we wake up and bolt to the airport
5:40am – I arrive at the airport to find out that I’ve missed the window of time to check-in and make my 6am flight! For the record, you have to arrive 30 minutes prior to your flight to still have a flying chance to board. I’m hoping everyone at the airport forgave me for skipping every line I could…I’ll deposit some good travel karma later on this trip to make up for it.
7:00am – hop on the next available flight to Atlanta. I was so tired I slept through take-off and woke to clouds outside the windows.
9:50am – land in Atlanta
9:55am – somewhere on the runway my Shanghai flight takes off without me
10:15-ish pm – grab breakfast at a bar at the airport and meet a nice couple who want to set me up with their son when I return to Boston in the fall. The mother gave me her business card.
noon – Paul Coloma, a friend from Xavier, picks me up at a Marta stop (Atlanta’s subway)
2:30 – I roam Emory’s campus while Paul has a meeting
now – Amanda, Paul’s wife, is making my last home-cooked meal. Wonderful aromas are coming from the kitchen. The entree is going to be pork chops with a peach glaze which I’m really excited about. Paul and Amanda have been awesome!
The new plan: catch my flight tomorrow at 10:05am!
Oh the adventures, misadventures and unforeseen stories that still lie ahead!
Editor’s note: this was written last night and I’m happy to report that it’s almost 7am in Atlanta and I’ll be leaving for the airport soon. It looks like I’ll catch my 10:05am flight today! More to come…
