Add Sleep to your Itinerary

August 9th, 2009 · 6 Comments

One thing that is always overlooked when making travel plans is sleep. When I hear some people’s travel itineraries that list off 10 cities in 10 days, I get exhausted thinking about it. I remember meeting some guys in Germany who were just catching a little sleep on overnight trains as they partied through Europe for 4 days. It sounded fantastic. However, while a fast pace is really fun and exciting, it will also burn you out really fast too. Budget in sleep even if it means cutting down on your to-do list. You can sleep when you’re dead, but who wants to be dead-tired trekking around on a trip? On that note…I’m going to catch some Zzzzzs now!

Good tip, I have often made plans on trips to Spain to sun bathe all day, while catching a few sites along the way and then partying all night long. Every time I am exhausted by day 4, it is good to make a plan and yes to factor in the sleep will definetely help.

    Cheers Oisin

I agree, sometimes I look back on holidays and think that I missed out on stuff because there were days that I just had to lie in in bed because I hadnt made anytime for sleep.

I always try to multi-task when it’s time for sleep. For example — booking an overnight train or bus so that you can sleep while moving — and wake up ready to go!

Hi Daniel! Love the tip! I definitely have slept on trains and find them to be really restful and efficient too!

Hi Sarah! Thanks for the comment! A couchsurfing friend once shared “time you enjoy wasting isn’t time wasted.” Don’t feel guilty about sleeping in….I know I don’t 😛
